Pasadena Designer’s Showcase House 2022

As interior designers and architects, it’s important to always be expanding our knowledge base and design vocabulary. We do this mostly by exposing ourselves to new inspiration sources, and fortunately, it’s one of the most fun parts of the job!

If you’re passionate about interior design and architecture and you find yourself in the L.A. area during spring, the Pasadena Showcase House is not one to be missed.

In fact I’ll up the ante by stating the city of Pasadena is not to be missed. With miles of early twentieth-century historic homes and commercial buildings, the Huntington Museum, Library and Gardens, Gamble House Arts & Crafts masterpiece, Wrigley Mansion’s Tournament of Roses parade headquarters, Cal Tech, the ArtCenter College of Design, there’s a lot in Pasadena for a design aficionado.

But back to the Designer’s Showcase house - let’s take a look at what the 2022 tour had to offer.

The 2022 Pasadena Showcase house living room designed by Robert Frank Interiors.

California Arts & Crafts and Spanish Colonial Revival are the stand-out architecture styles in Pasadena, but others include Tudor and Norman revival, which are based on a 20th century interpretation of their respective English design periods. This year’s showcase house is in South Pasadena and is a Tudor revival built in 1905 for Mr. Harry Hawgood, a English civil engineer (and apparently a successful one :).

Note - I unfortunately don’t have images of all the rooms since my iPhone photography abilities only get me so far, but I do have video of many of them on Instagram.

Here’s a view from the entry looking towards the living room:

Here’s a close up of the fireplace in the living room. Robert Frank used a few of these landscapes which I really liked.

I also appreciated seeing the ceramic fireplace balls in the gas fireplace. They’re a great look for gas fireplaces either indoors or around the patio firepit. They sit on a burner pan and you can stack the balls as you like. When you fire up the gas, the flame pops through the voids in the balls, creating a chic and modern alternative to fireplace logs.

We moved from the living room into the library. I really love library/media rooms. There’s something about these dark and dramatic spaces that just works for me. (So much so that I designed my own a while back.) Here are a couple images:

This staircase painting over the books is fabulous - I kept taking pictures of it. Library designed by Stephanie Hatten Interiors.

I loved this pop of poppy (#sorrynotsorry) with the sofa, tulips, and book in the library, and don’t miss the ceiling. Stephanie Hatten Interiors.

I love vignettes like this. So often all you need is a sprig or two of greenery. The orb vase with a bit of asparagus fern on the book looks perfect. Stephanie Hatten Interiors.

Pasadena Showcase has an official paint palette every year and this year’s came from Dunn Edwards. Here’s the family room which used Dunn Edwards Black Bay paint as the library did.

I love this small asian-inspired sofa. (I hauled home a similar one from Goodwill years ago with dreams of re-upholstering it - didn’t happen.)

The family room was also done with sophisticated and cozy neutrals and was a harmonious transition from the library. Tocco Finale

Here’s the guest suite. I love bed scarves. I saw them everywhere when traveling in Thailand once, but rarely in the U.S. The fabric here reminds me of obi silk. The headboard was designed by Rachel Duarte. Rachel Duarte Design Studio

I was drawn to this cabinetry surrounding the washer-dryer since it’s so similar to some of my own cabinetry. The mesh screen almost makes a feature out the appliances. Denise Bosley Interiors

The kitchen was spacious yet warm with the mix of metal and wood. I love the hand-planed walnut on the island. Cozy Stylish Chic

The Monogram range looks fantastic with mixed metals and the dramatic hood. Cozy Stylish Chic

I love everything about this - the dark veined stone, the extra-wide pulls, the bronze-trimmed uppers, and the microwave positioning. Cozy Stylish Chic

I’d happily move into the pool cabana too! The warm wood (warm wood tones & palettes are back in a big way!) next to the sage greens and whites is soothing and beautiful. The Art of Room Design

This Asian credenza in the pool cabana’s dressing area looks great next to the organic wallpaper that coordinates with the adjacent living room’s pillow fabric. (see prior image) The Art of Room Design
